In this work, I investigate the mechanics of retronymy, its semantics and its contribution to neology. By the term “retronymy” I refer to the relation that holds between the members of pairs like watch – analog watch, milk – whole milk, book – printed book etc. where the second member is referred to as the “retronym”. First, I define the phenomenon and briefly review the relevant literature. Then, I reconsider the main characteristics of retronymy and I view the whole relation in terms of (auto) hyponymy/ taxonymy and oppositeness. I also extend my analysis to polarity and to recursion. Furthermore, I examine the morphological status of retronyms/neonyms and the abbreviating process in retronym / neonym expressions as an indication for transfer from special to general vocabulary. Finally, I examine the mechanism that imports English retronyms /neonyms into Greek and explore a few cases of indigenous retronyms /neonyms in Greek.
